Congratulations to Paolo Virzì who will this evening be awarded DIrector of the Year at the Ischia Global Fest for his latest film, Il Capitale Umano (Human Capital), already having won 21 awards, with 6 1/2 million in ticket sales and sold to 35 countries.
Selena Gomez will be there to hand him his prize, with American producers Mark Canton and Avi Lerner onhand. “Evidently I was able to tell a story of some kind of Italy, the mystery, the anguish, the unhappiness in these days of crisis using a thriller that is a narrative theme that is different for a box office with an orientation toward comedy”, said the director.”Instead the theater-going public is more advanced and underestimated than one would think and they rewarded us”.
Virzì’s thoughts are on America these days. “I’m being sent scripts that I never could have imagined from the USA”, he confessed. “Not independent scripts but ones from the studios and they’re asking me to direct action movies and ones with high budgets. They’ve explained to me that these days blockbusters are given to auteur directors like Sam Mendes in 007. Who knows if I will have the courage…”
Coraggio Paolo! Ti aspettiamo qui in America!
Il Capital Umano is based on a novel by American author Stephen Amidon, Virzì taking Amidon’s story of Connecticut families and making them Italian.
