It’s that time of the year again; I’m getting ready for the Venice Film Festival and I am going to be yammering on about it incessantly so get ready.
Some say that Venice has lost its clout but it’s still one of the most important film festivals in the world.
La Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia, “International Exhibition of Cinematographic Art of the Venice Biennale” is the oldest international film festival in the world. Screenings take place on Lido, a sandbar just east and across a lagoon from San Marco. I think people picture the film festival a bad time to visit Venice, but in reality it’s a wonderful time. Just don’t stay on Lido; it’s nuts out there.
We stay at the Hotel Luna Baglione, on the canal and just a 2 minute walk from a special vaporetto that goes straight to the film festival. It would be easier to get to the screenings if you stay on Lido, but I like getting away from it all and being where the better restaurants are.
If you think that it’s too crazy to visit Venice during the festival, you’re wrong. Back in Venice most tourists don’t even know that it’s going on. And it’s FUN! Last year we got to see Daniele Radcliffe, Scarlett Johannson, and James Franco, along with tons of Italian stars like Valerio Mastandrea, Giuseppe Battiston, and Alba Rohrwacher.
This year I am most excited about seeing Ivan De Matteo’s ‘I Nostri Ragazzi’, starring MY FAVORITE Luigi Lo Cascio, Alessandro Gassman, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, and Barbora Bobulova.
And I’d better pack my pearls: I want to arrive in style like these stars did in past years.
