Attention Canadians: Don’t miss Black Souls, Anime Nere, from director Francesco Munzi tomorrow at the Toronto Film Festival.
At Venice there was a full five minutes of cheers and applause for the film in competition there, and much praise.

Based on a novel by Gioacchino Criaco, Anime Nere is being called by some “the new Gomorra”, but it’s an unfair comparison; I found Anime Nere a mafia movie with an even more compelling narrative than Garrone’s classic story of Naple’s Camorra. In Anime Nere, three brothers from a Calabrian crime family see the future of the family’s heroin/goat herding organization in different ways. The interactions are authentic and the dialogue in Calabrian dialect realistic; mafia movie afficianados will find the the criminals in Anime Nere satisfying, those who just love a good family drama will be equally drawn in.
