Prince Antonio Focas Flavio Angelo Ducas Comneno De Curtis di Bisanzio Gagliardi, otherwise known as Totò, “il principe della risata” (the prince of laughter), was an Italian comedian, film and theatre actor, writer, singer and songwriter that nobody can get over here in Italy.
Born 15 February 1898 and died 15 April 1967, he made 100 movies and is still considered a comic genius that even Checco Zalone can only hope to aspire to.
Ask anybody (and I do), “Who makes the best comedies here in Italy?” and more often than not, the answer is Totò. I didn’t say “made”, I said, “makes”, but no matter. Apparently he set the bar pretty high.
So I give up; let’s watch a Totò movie. strong>Chi si ferma è perduto is complete and free on YouTube. (He who stops is lost).
