The Italian Movie Lover’s Christmas List

If you know an Italian movie lover, here’s what they want for Christmas, and if you’re the Italian movie lover, here’s a list you’ll want to leave lying around the house for your family to find.

If you have a region free DVD player, the world is your oyster – you can buy your DVDs from Italy and all over the world. My favorite source for Italian DVDs is ibs.it, and their gift certificate, the HAPPY CARD, is an easy gift to give and receive.

You don’t have a region free DVD player? Then put it on your list. I have this one from Sony and it costs about $40.

For Italian movie lovers who also love to read, there are a couple of great books that have recently been adapted into Italian movies:

Italy’s submission to the Oscars this year, Il Capitale Umano, a movie directed by Paolo Virzì is based on a best selling English language novel by Stephen Amidon, Human Capital. This is one of those books that is just as entertaining as the movie.

Herman Koch’s bestselling, The Dinner, has become a great Italian movie called I Nostri Ragazzi, and you’ll want to read the book as well as see the film.

If your Italian is good, you’ll want to read Marco Olivieri’s La Memoria Degli Altri – Il Cinema di Roberto Andò. It’s a fascinating study of director Roberto Andò’s films like Viva La Libertà.

All I want for Christmas is a trip to the best Italian film festival ever, Open Roads: New Italian Cinema, every year in June at New York City’s Lincoln Center. The festival is a great way to hear directors and actors talk about their movies in an intimate setting.
