Strong Italian Presence at Tribeca 2015

Saverio Costanzo and the Taviani brothers will join Laura Bispuri in New York!

The Tribeca Film Festival will be April 15 – 26.

Hungry Hearts, Costanzo’s dark and eerily engaging English language film starring Alba Rohrwacher and Adam Driver (Girls) premiered at the Venice Film Festival and completely bowled us over. In this emotional thriller, a chance meeting in the bathroom of a New York City Chinese restaurant brings Jude, a young American engineer and Mina, an Italian girl working for the embassy together and a pregnancy seals the deal. But the romantic idea of throwing caution to the wind and marrying someone you know too little about is a bad one for Jude.

We’re most excited about Laura Bispuri’s ‘Vergine Giurata’, the story of girls and women in Albania’s patriarchal society. In order to hold jobs and do all the other fun stuff that men are allowed to do but women aren’t, women can renounce their femininity and become sworn virgins, taking a vow of chastity and wearing male clothing in order to live as men. As men, they can take jobs, smoke, wear men’s clothes, drink alcohol, carry a gun, and be the head of the household. For some, it’s strictly a financial situation, but it’s also a way to avoid unwanted marriages, and probably a means of freedom for lesbians in a society with few rights for women.

Vergine Giurata will compete at Tribeca.
