‘Black Souls’ Ticket Winners

Our conclusion: Italian-Americans LOVE their families.

The award-winning Black Souls (Anime Nere) from director Francesco Munzi opens Friday in New York and to celebrate, we’re giving away tickets.

Based on a novel by Gioacchino Criaco, “Black Souls” is being called by some “the new Gomorrah”, but Black Souls is not just a mafia movie and has an even more compelling narrative than Garrone’s classic story of Naples’ Camorra. In Black Souls, three brothers from a Calabrian crime family see the future of the family’s heroin/goat herding organization in different ways. The interactions are authentic and the dialogue in Calabrian dialect realistic; mafia movie aficionados will find the criminals in Black Souls satisfying, those who just love a good family drama will be equally drawn in.

So we asked you to tell us about YOUR family dramas.

We asked for your family dirt, and what we got, for the most part, were loving tributes to Italian-American families.

Our winners are:

Ray McInerney, who wrote: My grandparents left Sicily for good in the mid-1920’s and I feel an enormous sense of gratitude to them for the life and wonderful famiglia that they built in Brooklyn.

Melba Moore, who wrote: Sicilian father, wonderful father and wonderful mother by his side.

And one non Italian-American, Evelyn Frison, who wrote:

A complicated mix of cultural backgrounds and different personalities.

Thanks to everyone who entered and please, take this opportunity to see one of Italy’s finest, Black Souls, a film that premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and has gone on to win multiple awards.
