A Home Run For Italy! Three Italian Films In Competition At Cannes!
Not that we’re surprised, but Matteo Garrone’s ‘Il Racconto Dei Racconti’, Nanni Moretti’s ‘Mia Madre’ AND Paolo Sorrentino’s English language film ‘La Giovinezza’ are headed for the Cannes Film Festival.
“We are happy and proud to represent Italy in competition at the next Cannes Film Festival. We are aware that is a wonderful opportunity for us and for all of Italian cinema.”
The joint statement from the 3 directors continued: “Our films, each in its own way, try to take a personal look on reality and on cinema. Our wish is that our presence at Cannes can be a stimulus for many other Italian directors that take less obvious and conventional paths”.
“The fact that Sorrentino and Garrone’s films are in English don’t bother me. I don’t think that it is a choice made to appease the international market. English is already the international esperanto, the world language, and the parts are played by Anglo-Saxon actors”, said festival director Thierry Frémaux.

Youth – La Giovinezza stars Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano and Jane Fonda. Il Racconto dei Racconti’ – Tale of Tales, Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones and John C. Reilly, with Alba Rohrwacher and other Italian actors.
As for Nanni Moretti, who has already won the Palme d’Or for La Stanza Del Figlio, Fremaux added, “The great Moretti competes for the second time for the Palme d’Or. Cannes would not be Cannes without him. We are loyal to him and he to us.”
“As usual, the film comes out in Italy before the festival,” he joked. “but if you don’t go to Rome to see Mia Madre, see it at the festival.”
Congratulations to these fine men and talented filmmakers. You are, as the cliché goes, already all winners.
