It premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year and did well at the Italian box office, now Il Giovane Favoloso, from director Mario Martone, is the SNGCI Film of the year 2015.

Starring Elio Germano, the film is about the celebrated eighteenth-century Italian poet, essayist and philosopher Giacomo Leopardi, Martone shot it in Leopardi’s actual house, and the streets on which he lived, and focuses not just on his work, but his personal life and his ravaging illness which was probably Pott’s Disease (tuberculosis of the spine).

Leopardi, as the film is called in English language distribution, will be screened at this year’s Open Roads: New Italian Cinema, at New York’s Lincoln Center, this June 4-11.
