The Davids are more fun than the Oscars; here’s why.
Imagine an award show world where the show is over in an hour, the acceptance speeches are short, gracious, and sweet, and nobody’s on the red carpet asking the stars birdbrained questions. Welcome to the world of the David Di Donatello Awards.
Italians complain that the show is full of snobs and is overblown, but with all due respect they have no idea what overblown means until they’ve watched a 10 hour Academy Awards debacle. In comparison, the Davids are unpretentious and straight-forward.
This year, Francesco Munzi’s Anime Nere (Black Souls) was the winner that took all, practically, anyway, with 9 awards including Best Film and Best Director.
Margherita Buy won best actress for her role in Nanni Moretti’s Mia Madre, making her the winningest actress of all time, surpassing Sofia Loren for Best Actress awards. We love La Buy, but we’d have liked to see Alba Rohrwacher get it this time, having had such a great year with performances in Virgine Giurata and Hungry Hearts.
Elio Germano got the Best Actor prize for his virtuoso performance in the period piece, Il Giovane Favoloso (Leopardi).
Congratulations to all the winners. The Academy of Italian Cinema can be proud that they’ve honored some wonderful Italian films.
