A Love Story And Only A Love Story, Nothing Else, Between Two Women Of A Certain Age
Italian Cinema is way out of the closet. Check out THE GAY GUIDE TO ITALIAN CINEMA.
Director Maria Sole Tognazzi had such a good experience with Margherita Buy making Viaggio Sola (A Five Star Life) that she thought about doing it again.
Due in theaters the first of October, Io e Lei (Me and Her) is a love story between two women, and in this case, women of a certain age. Also starring Sabrina Ferilli (La Grande Bellezza), Tognazzi describes it as a sort of La Cage aux Folles with women.
“But it’s not a remake”, she quickly added, “I wouldn’t dare try a remake of that masterpiece. It’s only a tribute.”
“I wanted to make a sentimental comedy, to tell a love story between two women of the age of these splendid actresses, to show how normal it is.”
“In the film, there actually isn’t anything about differences or rule-breaking, things that could happen between a man and a woman. When people realize that it’s just a love story and only a love story and nothing else, maybe even politics can take a few steps in advance.
Io e Lei is about Marina (Ferilli), out of the closet for years, and Federica (Buy), just out, with an ex-husband and kids, experiencing a homosexual love affair for the first time. “This is a film about freedom of choice for women, like in Viaggio Sola”, said Tognazzi. “In Italy there have been a lot of films with homosexual guys lately, but always young and never central to the film’s plot”.
