Bellocchio, Guadagnino, Messina or Guadino? Will one of them go home with the big prize?

We’ve yet to see Giuseppe Guadino’s Per Amor Vostro, to be screened tonight, the final night, of the Venice Film Festival, but what about the other Italian films that premiered here?

Right away, I’ll rule out Piero Messina’s L’Attesa. Though the Venice audience seemed to like it, the jury will no doubt be a little harder to please. Despite a fine performance from lead actress Juliette Binoche, the film makes little sense unless you’re able to accept a world without smartphones and without young women checking Facebook pages every 5 minutes.

Something very unexpected would have to happen for Luca Guadagnino to go home with the Golden Lion. His film, A Bigger Splash, has its good and bad points; great acting but a movie about annoying people has to offer a little more than this, for me at least.

So what’s left? Marco Bellocchio’s Sangue Del Mio Sangue (Blood of my Blood); is this one on the table? Secondo me, senza dubbio, no doubt.
Though I still don’t understand it, maybe not even a little bit, I feel let off the hook for even trying when I read everybody else’s reviews; apparently no one gets it, but most people loved it anyway.
And please don’t think I’m one of those Bellocchio worshipers that will praise anything he does. Bella Addormentata was a waste of Toni Servillo’s talent and a giant bore. But Bellocchio pulls out all the stops with Sangue Del Mio Sangue, and this one is a treasure. I usually reserve the world “magical” for Disney movies, but I’ve gotta say, this one’s a little magical. Creepy magical.
It could win.
