“Cinema is cinema”, actor and sometimes producer Valerio Mastandrea told us. If the director is a man, a woman, Italian, American…it’s all the same. Just people trying to reach out and tell a story.
And clearly, Italians are reaching out beyond their borders with movies like the one being considered for Oscar nomination Non Essere Cattivo (Don’t Be Bad), Piero Messina’s L’Attesa, Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth, Nanni Moretti’s Mia Madre, Cristina Comencini’s Latin Lover, Ivano De Matteo’s The Dinner Francesca Archibugi’s An Italian Name, and Maria Sole Tognazzi’s Io E Lei, ALL HERE FOR CINEMA ITALIAN STYLE LA.
When asked about the future of movie watching, and the effect that streaming will have on the availability of Italian cinema in America, Mastandrea couldn’t help but point out that movies are meant for the big screen.
“Go!” he told us. Go to a movie theater when an Italian film is at your cineplex. The problem, Valerio? It very seldom is.
