And Laura tells us that it is coming to America in March!
It was a great year for Italian films, but the big winner, according to Cinemaitaliano.info in 2015 is director Laura Bispuri and her compelling Vergine Giurata (Sworn Virgin).
Presented at a whopping 80 film festivals all over the world, it won over 30 awards including Nora Ephron Award at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
I compared Sworn Virgin to a fairy tale, with a heroine, Hana, who was lost in the woods for a while, but bread crumbs lead her out of the darkness and she found her way home. Hana, living in northern Albania, made the difficult choice provided by an increasingly archaic tradition that allows women the same rights as men if they agree to relinquish their femininity. I Love Italian Movies called it one of the 10 best of 2015.
The film is a study of human rights, gender and gender equality, family ties, and freedom; in my interview with Bispuri, actresses Alba Rohrwacher and Flonja Kodheli and producer Marta Donzelli, Flonja reminded me that “freedom doesn’t always mean happiness.”
Laura promises that the film will be here in American theaters in March (and we hope that she arrives with it!)
