22 million views on YouTube isn’t exactly chickenfeed. And it beats working.
With 22 million views on YouTube, The Pills are THE cultural and generational phenomenon of the moment and so when producer Pietro Valsecchi’s son showed it to him, he decided make it a movie.
Valsecchi, a producer for Checco Zalone’s Quo Vado (and the rest of Zalone’s films), and also for the film that Italy sent for Oscar consideration, Non Essere Cattivo, seems to know what he’s doing and we may be on the verge of the next really big thing.
DP and directo Luca Vecchi, Matteo Corradini, and Luigi di Capua, the stars of the web series will make their big screen debut with their comedy, Meglio Che Lavorare (It Beats Working), a film about the eternal adolescence of three thirty year olds, on January 21.
“We wanted to tell about something honest and biographical. Like for us, after graduating and only finding work that for 8 hours a day earned us 300 euro a month, we decided to do something that we liked and make videos in our kitchen”, explained Di Capua. In the beginning we were living in poverty, but to give up and go to work would have meant giving up something we believed in.
Given that the belief of the three protagonists is “A life with an alarm clock going off at 7:30 is a life not worth living”, this generation has gone beyond even the one that Checco Zalone promotes in Quo Vado, who says that a “posto fisso”, or basically a job that you can’t be fired from is the way to go. And they’ve been pulling in 10,000 a month from the web series, so doing what they like to do and doing it in their own kitchens seems to be working.
“It’s our story”, adds Di Capua. “We don’t care if they get us in Milan. We wanted to show the Rome that we live in, not dark like in Suburra, but not full of fake comfort either. I’ve never seen a loft in my life and I still eat with my parents.”
