Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary Fuocoammare is in competition, and Sara Serraiocco is a Rising Star at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.
Venice Film Festival Golden Lion winner Gianfranco Rosi (Sacro GRA) was still filming his newest, Fuocoammare at the Lampadusa location when he learned that it had been selected for the Berlin Film Festival competition. Fuoccoammare deals with the small Italian island that serves as a sort of port of entry for illegal immigrants that are flooding Europe from Africa and the Middle East.
When Rosi makes a documentary, he LIVES it, as he did when he lived in a van alongside the highway making Sacro GRA (about the people who live along the highway that forms a huge ring around Rome). This time he lived on Lampadusa for a year, in the middle of what has become a symbol of the immigration crisis, telling the stories of those who have lived on the island for generations, and those of the people who have risked their lives to get there.
Fuoccoammare will be in Italian theaters February 18th, and will debut at the Berlinale February 13.

SHOOTING STARS is a unique pan-European initiative which puts a spotlight on Europe’s best young actors. It helps to put emerging new acting talent at the forefront for the busy film and entertainment agenda which unfolds each year at the Berlin International Film Festival.
2014 marks the 17th edition of SHOOTING STARS. 10 prominent young actors (this year, Sara Serraiocco) who come from across Europe are chosen by a jury of experts from a broad list of potential candidates nominated by the member organizations of European Film Promotion (EFP).
The aim of EFP and the SHOOTING STARS project is to raise the profile of European film internationally.
