In the mood for love? Watch my favorite romantic movie for the first time or for the 100th time (like me) for a FREE St.Valentine’s treat.
Pane e Tulipani (Bread and Tulips) is the story of Rosalba, the underappreciated and underestimated housewife and mother who gets left behind at a rest stop on her family vacation when she stays in the bathroom too long.
They should have counted heads before they got back on the highway, and they shouldn’t have put the blame on poor Rosalba for the whole disaster, but in any case, they didn’t, and they did, and it was too much to bear, so she ran away from home.
It’s funny, it’s sweet, and it’s romantic; it’s my favorite movie of all time.
I love watching movies about young people falling in love – I do it all the time. But it means so much more to me in Pane e Tulipani because the couple is my age and because they aren’t Hollywood glamorous. Licia Maglietta is gorgeous, don’t get me wrong, but she was 47 when she made the movie and she’s not trying to look anything different. Fernando (Bruno Ganza), the man she meets on her adventure is extremely ordinary looking and much older – she fell for his kindness, his romantic gestures, and the way he looked at her, not for his looks.
But more than just romantic love, Pane E Tulipani is about the love between friends, and with yourself. “Imagine Your Life, Then Go Live It”, the tagline urges.
