Want to make him happy on his birthday? Go to the movies.
In LA to promote a film he had produced and not appeared in, Non Essere Cattivo (Don’t Be Bad), Valerio Mastandrea was asked about the future of movie watching, and the effect that streaming will have on the availability of Italian cinema in America. Mastandrea couldn’t help but point out that movies are meant for the big screen.
“Go to the movies!” he told us.
If only it were that easy! Though Italian films are rarely (if ever) playing at my cineplex, here are a couple of Valerio Mastandrea films you can watch at home.

Viva La Libertà (Long Live Liberty) Mastandrea plays an aide to a politician that goes AWOL.

Giulia Non Esce La Sera (Giulia Doesn’t Date At Night) Mastandrea plays a guy that risks everything for a woman he meets that’s on a prison work release program.

La Comandante e la Cicogna (Garibaldi’s Lovers) Mastandrea plays a widower who can’t seem to stop talking to his dead wife.
