The books author, Zambenedetti, is originally from Venice and moved to the United States to pursue a degree in Cinema Studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He stayed on for a PhD in Italian Studies also at NYU, and completed that in 2012.
He began his career at Ohio’s Oberlin College in 2014 as Visiting Assistant Professor of Cinema Studies and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow. Before joining Oberlin College he taught Italian Cinema at the University of Toronto, at CUNY’s College of Staten Island, and at New York University.
The idea of editing World Film Locations Florence came from his experience working for NYU’s study abroad programs, spending two summers there. He returned to Florence for seven consecutive years in January with another study abroad program also at NYU, the Freshmen Scholars Presidential Honors Program. In those years Florence became a bit of a second home for him, and thought dedicating World Film Locations book to the city would be a great addition to the series after Venice and Rome (he also contributed to those volumes).
He assembled a team of some of the finest scholars of Italian cinema to write the book and sees it just at home in the bibliography of an academic volume as in the back pocket of a film location tourist who wants to “find” cinema in the city.
He’s now editing the Cleveland, OH installment in the series , slated for a fall of 2016 release. Zambenedetti says “It will be a surprisingly rich addition to the series, and the plan is to launch it at the Cleveland Cinematheque. John Ewing, the Cinematheque’s director, has helped me a great deal, and he has supported the project since its inception.”
