The winner of the award in memory of Mario Verdone will be announced at the Lecce Festival of European Film by his children Silvia, Carlo and Luca Verdone.
The Nominees: Laura Bispuri for Vergine Giurata, Maccio Capatonda for Italiano Medio, Piero Messina for “L’attesa”, Duccio Chiarini for Short Skin, Francesco Ghiaccio for Un Posto Sicuro, Alberto Caviglia for Pecore in Erba, Carlo Lavagna per Arianna, Matteo Scifoni for Bolgia Totale, Tommaso Agnese for Mi chiamo Maya, Giovanni Virgilio per La Bugia Bianca.
Dedicated to Carlo Verdone’s Dad, the award honors a young Italian filmmaker (not over 40 years old) for their first work from the past season. I have never seen a year with such fierce competition, the list overflowing with brilliant talent, proof of a vibrant and thriving Italian film industry.
Congratulations to these amazing young directors, and to use a tired American cliché, “You’re all winners!” Because in this case, you all really are. You are the future of Italian cinema and the future is bright.
As far as I know, Duccio Chiarini’s Short Skin is the only one on the list that we can stream here in America, but the rest of them should be available soon, and I’ll let you know when I know.
