Question For You…How Important Is Contemporary Italian Cinema In The US?

Open Roads: New Italian Cinema 2016 is winding down, and Canada is gearing up for ICFF, but what does that mean for the average North American?

In New York City for The Film Society’s Lincoln Center’s spectacular Open Roads, New Italian Cinema, I asked every director and actor I met, “What’s happening with the distribution of your film?” and always always got the same confused reaction.

“My readers in middle America want to know when they’ll be able to see your movie”, I told director Gabriele Mainetti (They Call Me Jeeg, Mi Chiamavano Jeeg Robot).

“They do?” he was genuinely incredulous. “Where?”

“Well, for Ohio, for example”, I told him, “where I live.”

“People in Ohio have even heard of my movie?” He wasn’t buying it. “How do they even know about my movie?”

“Well, from me, for example.”

The truth is, though the chances of seeing Jeeg Robot in your city is better than some others (it’s a big box office hit in Italy and an exciting super hero/action movie that will appeal to the US), but some others, like Carlo Lavagna’s lovely Arianna will less likely to show up in your cineplex.

How will you find out? I’m on it; don’t worry. I’ll be letting you know what I know about distribution, film festivals, and streaming possibilities, but in the meantime, let me ask you, “If they show it, will you come?”
