A trailer for the upcoming HBO series has just been released.
Lenny Belardo, alias Pio XIII, is the first American Pope. Young and charming, his election seems the result of a simple and effective media strategy by the College of Cardinals. But like they always say, appearances can be deceiving. “Above all”, in the place and among the people that have made the choice there’s the great mystery of God, like a compass guiding their lives.
That place is the Vatican, those people are the head of the Catholic Church, and the most mysterious and contradictory of them all is the one who becomes Pio XIII. Clever and ingenious, funny and pedantic, old-fashioned and modern, doubting and resolute, sympathetic and ruthless, Pio XIII tries to find a God for the people, and for himself.
The young pope is Jude Law, and he’ll star alongside an international cast comprised of Diane Keaton (Sister Mary), Silvio Orlando (Cardinal Voiello), Scott Shepherd (Cardinal Dussolier), Cécile de France (Sofia), Javier Cámara (Cardinal Gutierrez), Ludivine Sagnier (Esther), Tony Bertorelli (Cardinal Caltanissetta) and James Cromwell (Cardinal Michael Spencer).
