Coming Attractions, Italian Cinema

Three of my favorite filmmakers are getting ready to bring you three more great films.

The huge success of Sydney Sibilia’s Smetto Quando Voglio (I Can Quit Whenever I Want) was not a one time thing; apparently it’s a trilogy!

In the first Smetto Quando Voglio, Pietro’s a frustrated biology professor (Edoardo Leo), highly educated and bright but unable to get ahead. One day Pietro sees an opportunity; he’s sure he can design his own drug; one that has none of the substances that are banned by the Italian government. It’s still illegal to sell what he comes up with, but that’s a minor technicality.

His criminal organization is in need of other skills, so he rounds up all his out-of-work friends, from a math genius to chemists to help him, and at first, it’s as if they have struck gold.

What can these boys be up to in part 2 of the trilogy? We’ll have to wait until February 2017 to find out.

Stars Edoardo Leo, Stefano Fresi, and Valerio Aprea.  #smettoquandovoglio

In Guerra Per Amore

Pierfrancesco Diliberto (known as Pif)’s first film, La Mafia Uccide Solo D’Estate (The Mafia Only Kills In The Summer) continues to delight us in the USA (you can stream it with  VUDU  iTunes or Netflix.)

His latest, In Guerra Per Amore (At War For Love) is due out in October of this year and is a romantic comedy set in Sicily during the time of the Americans’ landing in World War II. The film tells the story of the rise of the Mafia.

The protagonist, played by Pif, must enroll in the American army to win the hand of the lovely Flora.

Antonio Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia, the directors of one of my favorites of the last few years, Salvo (you can stream it: Amazon NETFLIX VUDU or iTunes) have an exciting project coming soon that they are calling Sicilian Ghost Story.

The screenplay was among the winners of this year’s Sundance Institute Global Filmmaking Award, and it’s being billed as “Brothers Grimm meets Cosa Nostra”Sicilian Ghost Story”. It’s  about a 13-year-old Sicilian girl named Luna who refuses to accept the sudden disappearance of Giuseppe, the young boy she loves, when he is kidnapped because he is the son of a Mafia boss.
