Pierfrancesco Diliberto (Pif) asks that we never forget.
Yesterday was the anniversary of the murder of a true Italian hero, Judge Paolo Borselino.
Killed along with 5 police officers by a Mafia car bomb in Palermo, he is considered to be one of the most important magistrates killed by the Sicilian Mafia. Along with Judge Giovane Falcone, also murdered by the mafia that summer, he was involved in the infamous Maxi Trial appeals, for the most part turning them down and forcing those convicted to serve their time.
TV star, filmmaker, and actor Pierfrancesco Diliberto (called “Pif”), says in La Mafia Uccide Solo D’Estate, his lovely tribute to Borselino, Falcone, and others that lost their lives fighting the mafia, “When I became a father I learned two things: The first, that I should protect my child from the evil in the world, and the second, that I should teach them what it is.”
In the film, parents tell their children not to worry about the Mafia, because “they only kill in the summer”, and for the most part, act as if the government has things under control, and the violence is happening somewhere else, to someone else.
It’s a funny, bittersweet history lesson for those of us who aren’t familiar with those years of violence in Italy, and a reminder for those who lived through it to remain ever vigilant.
