Lots of youthful energy at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Giuseppe Piccioni’s got the best of both worlds in his film, Questi Giorni, in competition for the Golden Lion. He’s got the star power of Margherita Buy and what looks like might be a version of Girls, all’Italiana.
Piccioni says it’s “the story of a group of small town college girls, at the age that making choices for their future can no longer be avoided. Still, they are living under a kind of spell where the future, even with all their problems, seems full of promise.”
Also in competition for the big prize, Roan Johnson’s ‘Piuma’ is the story of 18-year-old Ferro and Cate and an unexpected pregnancy that turns their world upside down.
The first two segments of Paolo Sorrentino’s HBO mini-series The Young Pope will be shown as a special event in Venice and though Jude Law (playing the Pope) isn’t a kid, he’s obviously young for the Papacy.
Gabriele Muccino’s ‘L’Estate Adosso’ (Summertime) is a “coming-of-age/road movie about four youths in that unique unrepeatable formative phase after high school, before college, during which they crack the shell of adolescence.” It will be screened in the Cinema Nel Giardino section of the festival
