Auteur, actor, director Sergio Castellito is the OG of Italian cinema.
In the early part of the new millennium when I started watching new Italian movies a name that kept popping up was Sergio Castellito. Watching a movie that he directed, starred in, and helped write the screenplay for, Non Ti Muovere (Don’t Move) was a defining moment for me; I knew it was big, and I knew something special was happening in Italian cinema.
Castellito has made film adaptations of three books written by his wife, best selling author Margaret Mazzantini: Non Ti Muovere (Don’t Move), Venuto Al Mondo (Twice Born), and Nessuno Si Salva Da Solo (You Can’t Save Yourself Alone).
He’s starred in movies by great directors like Marco Bellocchio (L’Ora Del Religione and Il Regista di Matrimoni), Daniele Ciprì (La Buca), Paolo Genovese (Una Famiglia Perfetta), and Paolo Virzì (Caterina Va in Città).
When we talk about the rebirth of Italian cinema, we must recognize Sergio Castelitto, a leader in filmmaking with substance, intelligence, and authenticity. For today’s young filmmakers, he’s the OG, a trailblazer and visionary. Tanti Auguri Sergio!
