Italy could be the next star of the Oscars.
Lina Wertmüller might be the next to receive the Governor’s Award, the prestigious prize given by the Academy of Motion Pictures to honor an artist’s career every year.
The Italian director, the first woman ever to be nominated for an Oscar in 1975 (for Pasqualino Settebellezze, Seven Beauties) is a frontrunner, supported by important people like Sophia Loren, Harvey Weinstein, Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford.
Next Thursday the 54 members of a committee will have a secret vote and the winner will be announced. Other directors that are in the running: James Ivory, Peter Bogdanovich, Richard Lester and Terrence Malick.
