Mr. and Mrs. Schreiber unveil their film The Bleeder, and Liev receives the Visionary Talent Award.
My husband Brian is a huge boxing fan and I am obsessed with Liev Schreiber and his TV show Ray Donavan, so we decided to screen The Bleeder last night at the Venice Film Festival’s Sala Grande.
The only thing I didn’t like about this fact based and nostalgia drenched ’70s tale is that it brought back too many memories of my hair and my clothes in the ’70s (was there ever such an unattractive era?).
The Bleeder’s got a frighteningly authentic look, a funtastic soundtrack (with all the ’70s disco music I hated in high school but have grown to appreciate) and a truly fascinating story about the boxer that the Rocky movies were based on, Chuck Wepner.
With Schreiber as Wepner and Naomi Watts as Wepner’s second wife Linda, this biopic glamorizes neither the boxer or boxing; rather it tells a very human story of a simple guy and how celebrity is too much for him to handle.
