Dark Waves: ‘Time Warner On Demand’ Owes Me An Apology

…and my money back.

In my quest to watch all Italian movies, I watched this one, but I’m hoping you won’t. It’s the story of a couple who move to a lighthouse in a small village and, after finding some gold nuggets in a fish they are having for dinner, get visited by zombie ghost pirates. There’s a “love story” in there and a back story about war crimes, and horror fans might like this one. It may have a cult following (that I just don’t get). But Time Warner Video has shown a serious lack of judgment offering Dark Waves for its On Demand customers, and here’s why:

The Top Ten Reasons Time Warner On Demand Owes Me An Apology (and my money back).

1.’Dark Waves’ is really dated, and not in a good way.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think that if you are going to do giallo these days, it had better be neo-giallo, and not try to recreate something from the ’70s. There are probably those of you who get a warm and fuzzy nostalgic feeling from watching this kind of dated horror movie, but the vast majority of us are going to have a more “What the hell?” reaction to it.

2. The leading man and leading lady look more like a small town meth dealer and a ’90s rockabilly singer.

He was supposed to be a big bad soldier, but I am pretty sure she could kick his ass.

3. Still, they are scarier than the pirate zombie ghosts.

I love scary movies, but when the pirate zombie ghosts came knocking on the couple’s tower door, they were about as scary as overgrown trick or treaters.

4. It’s creepy, but not in the way the filmmaker intends.

I admit I had a kind of sick feeling in my stomach watching Dark Waves, but not because of the purported horror or surrealism.

5. Of all of the hundreds of Italian movies that Americans won’t get to see, THIS IS THE ONE THEY WILL?

I can think of hundreds Italian movies that will never screen in the USA that I would rather have seen on Time Warners list of “World Cinema”. That they have included Dark Waves and left out so many good ones is beyond disappointing.
