Maybe Paolo Sorrentino and I were wrong about this.
When the committee that director Paolo Sorrentino served on to choose the film that would represent Italy at the Oscars, I suggested they choose Edoardo De Angelis’s Indivisibili, or the Netflix production, Suburra. I said that as good as Fuocoammare (Fire At Sea) is, I wouldn’t choose a documentary.
Sorrentino, who was at odds with his fellow committee members and called the group’s decision“a pointless, masochistic exercise in undermining Italian cinema, which could have submitted two films to compete for an Oscar this year: a fiction film which I believe would have stood a very good chance is Indivisibli by Edoardo De Angelis, whereas Fuocoammare would be capable of competing, and winning, in the documentary category.”
Great minds think alike? Or are we just wrong about this?

Look at the facts.
We were introduced to Gianfranco Rosi’s Fuocoammare when it won the biggest prize at the Berlinale (Berlin Film Festival), the Golden Bear. Not a prize for best documentary, it won for best film.
Fuocoammare has gone on to impress audiences at major film festivals all over the world, like this year’s New York Film Festival, and it will be screened at this year’s Chicago Film Festival later this month.

It was announced today that the film was named the European film of the year by the International Film Fest, Capri, Hollywood.
Fuocoammare is one of 5 European films that has been nominated for a European Film Award (EFA).
Though so far it has been mostly Europe to praise the film, its topic is hot-button worldwide, illegal immigration, a possibile determining factor for our choice of president here in the US.
“Within Immigration Customs Enforcement I’m going to create a new special deportation task force,” says presidential candidate Donald Drumpf, and one can only imagine the alarming course of events should he win the election.
