Director Luca Miniero sticks to the Northern vs Southern Italy formula that worked so well for him in Benvenuti al Nord and Sud with a new film, opening today:
Un Boss In Solotto stars the adorable Paola Cortellesi along with Rocco Papaleo, Luca Argentero, and Angela Finocchiaro, in a film about the perfect northern Italian housewife and mother with a secret; her name’s not Cristina, it’s Carmela, and she comes from a Mafia family, very different from the perfect one in her new life in Bolzano.
The jig’s up (I’m showing my age – the jig’s up is an old-timey phrase that means that “her ruse has been discovered”) when her brother (Papaleo) shows up from the south needing a place to hide out. Un Boss in Salotto opens today in Italian theaters.
Can’t wait for the other chance to see Paolo Cortellesi in a comic pairing with Carlo Verdone that seems long overdue. Sotto Una Buona Stella has Carlo in his usual sad sack single guy role; his ex-wife has died and so his children come to live with him. Paola is the next door neighbor that helps him get to know these kids that he’s never formed much of a relationship with. Also starring Tea Falco from Bernardo Bertolucci’s ‘Io e Te’, this one opens February 13.
Paolo Virzì’s new Il Capitale Umano opens January 9 and the critics are already loving it. It has an amazing cast; Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Valeria Golino, Fabrizio Gifuni, and Luigi Lo Cascio, and it takes place at Lake Como. One snowy night a poor waiter on a bike on his way home from work is hit by an affluent family’s SUV. The day after, the destinies of both families begin to change in ways that neither could have anticipated.
I Love Italian Everything
