Miracle at St. Anna is historical fiction, Spike Lee’s touching tribute to the African-Americans in World War II, the Buffalo Soldiers. Segregated from the white guy part of the army, these soldiers cross a river into German-occupied Tuscany in 1944 and get stuck behind enemy lines in the village of Colognora. Second Staff Sgt. Aubrey Stamps (Derek Luke), Sgt. Bishop Cummings (Michael Ealy), Cpl. Hector Negron (Laz Alonso) and PFC Sam Train (Omar Benson Miller) find the Italians they are holed up with more tolerant than the white folks back home.
Fast forward to 1983 and an African-American New York postal clerk shoots an Italian American who is in his line at the post office. In his apartment, police find a valuable Italian artifact and the mystery begins to unfold.
A bonus for Italian movie lovers: a big cast of great Italian actors like Giselda Volodi (Bread and Tulips), Luigi Lo Cascio, Pierfrancesco Favino, and a lot of Italian dialogue (with subtitles) that makes the film extra authentic.
On this Veterans Day, Miracle at St. Anna would be a great choice, “Lest We Forget”.
